Chester A. Arthur
Twenty-First
President,
1881–1885
|
I may be president of the United States,
but my private life is nobody's business.
—After burning his personal papers.
Elegant Arthur: Chester A. Arthur is often remembered for his muttonchop sideburns and expensive wardrobe, but he also deserves recognition for his many achievements. Before serving as president, this Phi Beta Kappa lawyer won an important case desegregating New York streetcars. And in office, he battled corruption on many fronts. He did not tell many people that he was suffering from a fatal kidney disease during his last three years in office.
